The New Mexico Community Foundation has created a new organization, NewMexicoWomen.org, which is a resource for anyone interested in the status of women and girls in our state. Its mission is to "advance opportunities for women and girls statewide, so they can lead self-sufficient, healthy, and empowered lives." In New Mexico, women comprise a majority of the population, 51%, and girls comprise 49% of the state’s under-eighteen population. The rates of gender-based violence in New Mexico, compared to the national rates, are significant. In spite of being a majority of the population, women in New Mexico contend with inequalities, while being under resourced and represented.
The experience and situation of women in any community dramatically impacts families and entire communities. NewMexicoWomen.org is advancing the entire New Mexican community by advancing women and girls. The initiative is committed to increasing opportunities for women and girls in New Mexico through education, research and information sharing, leadership in collaboration, and investment through targeted grants. A recent report compiled and posted by NewMexicoWomen.org, the New Mexico Women’s Indicator Report: a Statistical Resource Guide to Women and Girls in New Mexico, brings together research and information on these segments of our State.
NewMexicoWomen.org recognized a need for shared, measurable information on women and girls in the state. This need led to the creation of the New Mexico Women's Indicator Report: a Statistical Resource Guide to Women and Girls in New Mexico. Conveying this information in a manageable report can open conversation toward effective advocacy and resource development. It also is a way of demonstrating what we do and do not know about women in New Mexico and as part of the New Mexican life. What this report is not, a report that sways the data, or seeks to direct initiatives aimed at New Mexican women. What this report is, an accessible consolidation of recent data and statistics from a variety of State and National sources with narrative providing for interpretation. It has numerous uses including statistical support for outreach and conversations, structuring programs and initiatives focused on women or girls, data and information for grant development and reporting, and for community decision-making. Beyond useful statistics, the report is a tool for advancing New Mexican women, bringing together information for informed conversations and outreach.
The New Mexico Women’s Indicator Report can be viewed and, after completing a brief form, downloaded, and feedback can be given, from the organization's site: www.NewMexicoWomen.org
